Imperfect knowledge-based concept of risk and dependability
Abstract
The objective of the presentation is to propose a universal concept of quantitative risk and dependability assessment related to the occurrence of different threats and hazards, and resulting in disrupting process continuity on a large scale. This problem is particularly important for the large scale complex systems, for instance, global supply chains. Firstly, the methods for modelling uncertainty in terms of their applicability to assess this type of risk will be reviewed, and then the concept of a universal model be presented, enabling a quantitative risk assessment, also in unusual situations that have not yet appeared in the past. The concept of imperfect knowledge as well as the critical analysis of existing methods for the description of uncertainties in the data, information and knowledge will be discussed. On this background a new imperfect knowledge based concept of risk, as the basis for describing disruption-related system attributes, will be proposed. Then, a universal framework for disruption risk prediction and the concept of dependability will be introduced as the generalization of the term “reliability”. The usefulness of the presented method will be verified on the example of some global large scale systems.
Biography
Lech A. Bukowski is a professor at the University of Dąbrowa Górnicza (Poland). His area of interest includes System Science, and especially Systems Engineering, Quality and Reliability Engineering, Resilience Engineering and Industrial Logistics. He has published more than 220 scientific papers and he is the author or co-author of 12 monographs in Polish, English and German language.
He has graduated from the AGH University of Science and Technology Cracow (Ph.D. degree in 1976 and D.Sc.- Habilitation in 1990) and he achieved the title Professor of Engineering in 1998. In 2003 prof. Bukowski received an honour of Professor Honoris Causa in the Technical University Clausthal (Germany). He is an active member of the Scientific Committees of many international congresses and conferences (e.g. chairman of the Conference Total Logistic Management since 1996) and member of the editorial boards of scientific periodicals. Since 2002 prof. Bukowski has been a member of the Siemens Award Chapter. He has been invited to academic institutions as a Visiting Professor in such countries as: the United States of America, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia.
His professional career began in the Chemical Company “Azoty Tarnów” and continued as head of the research group at the Metallurgical Company “Nowa Huta” in Cracow. From 1976 to 1994 he was a lecturer at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics) and in the meantime (from 1981 to 1987) he worked as an Assistant Professor at the Technical University Clausthal in Germany. In a time-period from 1994 to 2003 he worked as a Professor of Engineering and a Head of the Department for Systems Quality and Reliability as well as a Director of the Institute of Control Engineering. From 2003 to 2013 prof. Bukowski worked at the Faculty of Management at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow as a Head of the Chair of Systems Engineering (2003 – 2012) and a Dean of the Faculty (2005 – 2012). Since 2013 he has been working in the University of Dąbrowa Górnicza as a Director of Business Engineering Center.
