Workshop on Machine Learning Techniques in SHM

1st - 2nd October 2026, Hannover

Our bridges, towers, and buildings grow older every year, yet they rarely tell us when something is wrong. Machine learning, drawing on data from sensors that range from tiny strain gauges to satellites, promises to give them a voice. But do we understand that language, and can we read its messages well enough to trust them?

This workshop gathers a small circle of leading researchers and curious students to explore how physics and data can be combined into monitoring tools that are not only powerful, but interpretable and trustworthy. Over two days in Hannover, directly following EURODYN 2026, we will share recent advances, debate the open questions, and leave plenty of room to spark new ideas and collaborations. The aim is simple: to help structures speak, and to make sure we understand what they say.


A focused workshop on “Machine Learning Techniques in Structural Health Monitoring” will take place at Leibniz University Hannover from the afternoon of 1st October to the afternoon of 2nd October 2026, directly following EURODYN 2026.

The workshop is designed as a small, high-quality gathering of leading researchers, early-career scientists and invited participants working at the interface of machine learning, structural health monitoring, performance engineering and related fields. Rather than following the format of a large formal conference, the workshop will place particular emphasis on exchange, discussion and the development of new ideas and collaborations.

The workshop will begin on the evening of 1st October with a welcome coffee, a short introduction and an informal networking reception, followed by dinner. An optional after-dinner session may include a short informal contribution on future perspectives in SHM and PE-MLE, or a thematic film or documentary relevant to machine learning and structural systems.

The second day, 2nd October, will be dedicated to scientific exchange. The preliminary programme includes expert lectures, dedicated discussion sessions, a panel discussion and an open collaborative discussion. 

The aim is to create an open and productive atmosphere in which participants can discuss current challenges, emerging methods, hot topics and future research directions in machine learning-based structural health monitoring. The workshop will also provide space for participants to get to know each other and explore potential collaborations.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided throughout the workshop. Dinner on 1st October and lunch on 2nd October are also included.

Since the workshop takes place directly after EURODYN 2026, the timing may be particularly convenient for participants who are already planning to attend the conference in Hannover.
