Title: Centrifuge model studies on spudcan-pile interaction
Abstract:
Owing its mobile nature, jack-up rigs are commonly employed for the exploration of oil and gas in marginal fields due to lower cost as compared to fixed offshore platforms. In an exploration field, only the relatively small jacket platform remains at site permanently while the jack-up rigs may move in and out of the site. Spudcan is the foundation supported the jack-up rigs. The installation of the much larger size spudcan may induce severe stress on the comparatively small piled foundation supporting the jacket platform. At the National University of Singapore, extensive centrifuge and numerical model tests had been performed to investigate the interaction between the spudcan foundation supporting the jack-up rig and the piled foundation supporting the jacket platform. Three soil formations were investigated; and these include soft clay, soft over stiff clay, and sand over soft clay. The findings and practical implications of the studies will be presented in this seminar.
