Structural reliability analysis and design optimization considering fuzzy uncertainty

 

Abstract:

Research on structural reliability analysis and design optimization under uncertainty is curial for assessing the impact of uncertainty on structural safety and ensuring optimal performance while meeting reliability requirements. Although extensive progress has been made in establishing structural reliability analysis and design optimization frameworks under random uncertainty, there remains a notable absence of a comprehensive and rigorous theoretical foundation for addressing fuzzy uncertainty. My research primarily focuses on developing effective methods for fuzzy reliability analysis, fuzzy safety life analysis, and fuzzy reliability-based design optimization. The goal is to establish a complete theoretical framework of reliability analysis and design optimization under fuzzy uncertainty, thereby providing a solid foundation for practical engineering applications. For fuzzy reliability analysis, my research contributes an extended fuzzy first-order and second-moment method to achieve an analytical solution of fuzzy reliability index. Furthermore, innovative approaches such as hierarchical sampling, sample pool reduction strategy, adaptive learning, and well-defined stopping criteria are explored to effectively combine the predictive ability of surrogate model with the universality of fuzzy simulation in solving fuzzy reliability index. For safety life analysis and design optimization model under fuzzy reliability constraints, there is a common challenge of coupling fuzzy reliability constraints in safety life analysis and the search for optimal design solutions. This coupling significantly increases the computational complexity of safety life analysis and fuzzy reliability-based design optimization. To enhance efficiency, the equivalent constraint transformation and decoupled strategy are developed to solve the fuzzy safety life and fuzzy reliability-based design optimization model, streamlining computational processes and bolstering the applicability of these methodologies in engineering. 



Bio:

Xia Jiang is currently a Ph.D. student at Northwestern Polytechnical University since 2021 and also a CSC visiting PhD student in the Institute for Risk and Reliability at the Leibniz University Hannover since 2023. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree from Northwestern Polytechnical University in 2019. Ms. Jiang's research primarily focuses on reliability analysis and design optimization under fuzzy uncertainty. She has published 11 papers as the first author in international journals and led a doctoral dissertation innovation fund at Northwestern Polytechnical University. Ms. Jiang has awarded national scholarship for graduate students three times and was recognized as one of the top 10 outstanding graduate students at Northwestern Polytechnical University in 2023.
